The Week Past, the one Ahead

Here is a link to the June 21 Pipeline. There will be NO PIPELINE next week! We have to get the entire booklet to a printer by Thursday the 30th. We will still blog and update the new website though.

Sneak Preview of Just a Few of Our Favorite Ads

There are over 40 display ads in the booklet, and many of them are extremely unique, which makes them fun. Gathered together, it almost does feel like a yearbook for our neighborhood written from the ground up, as in a near 7-year-footprint of wandering around.

So I guess whatever happens with this booklet, I know that what I've enjoyed the most thus far is putting it together. From the perspective of a local suffering from an illness related to documenting most everything, it's totally fun to see so many familiar faces in the pages of the booklet. We've got a long way to go in terms of laying everything out on pages and editing down text to save money, but we are seeing the flash of light at the end of the tunnel!

Back to work.

Aliens Over Wicker Park!

If my apartment weren't so sweltering, and Harris didn't need to smoke a cigarette outside, we would have never captured this footage of an unidentified flying object over Wicker Park.

Maybe I should install my window AC unit.

Quote of day, "I don't notice the heat when I am working/writing." Perhaps I will be one of those idiots who dies from the heat because I will forget to do something about it.

As for going to a cafe to work, while it's tempting, I am also yapping on the phone all day as I am writing too. In a perfect world, a so-called writer or hack could just write anything, and from anywhere, but we are in the midst of wrapping up participation in the upcoming booklet!

People keep asking me what the booklet will look like and who is in it. So, there's interviews with seven amazing people (check out what Dov Charney said in his interview; he made it onto on my 'wall of inspiration'), one cool community gardener, a neighborhood tweeter, over 40 display ads and 100 listings! The 84-100 page (depending on what we can afford) full-color booklet will hopefully be perfect-bound vs. saddle-stitched if we can swing it, and if more Printer's Angels magically appear outta the woodwork. There is space on our logo page for four more angels.

Back to work.

The Week Past, The Week Ahead

It makes me sad to neglect this blog, but the new virtual home is really cool. i am geeking out on it. i am also catsittng and thinking that the nice thing about watching a neighbor's cat when you live in an apartment building is that you can still wear your robe, and you do not have to worry about a neighbor seeing you in your ratty robe. and, it's nice to go on a vacation from your apartment.

Link to the June 14 Pipeline is Here. Sorry anyone had to read that sad preamble ramble. New site has room for lots and lots of contributors. i can add you and the stories come in through there. anyone interesred should register at wordpress.com and i will add you to the pipeline network.

The Week Past, The Week Ahead

Here is a link to the June 7 Pipeline.

I will continue to try to blog here as well as on the new pipeline website's companion wordpress blog, chicagopipeline.wordpress.com which feels so empty and foreign to me right now. Moving to a new space- real or virtual- is kind of scary in the beginning.

Virtual crumbs everywhere!!

Thanks for patience if anyone is reading this blog- actually I think a few of you do. My sister-in-law says she sees the pipeline through the streets blog, and not the email list, or the Twitter feed, or on Facebook. And I know Mindy reads it via streets too. So, for the two of you whom I know are reading the weekly pipeline through this blog from time to time, and any others, I will continue to post the weekly pipeline here but dedicating a bit more time to our website.

We've got a New Website and I'm already freaking out about what I call Buttons, Banners, and "Blasts"

Well, it only took two or so years of covering the neighborhood, but the pipeline's website is up and running! Our home page features a farmer from the market, snapped a few summers back. In fact, there's farmers up the street right NOW as I type this, offering fresh produce and more. Ready. Set. Go. Read more here on our site, which looks a bit like this streets blog!

You can visit us at chicago-pipeline.com where things will be more centralized soon, once we get a grasp on which content we'd like to highlight. We still plan to send out the weekly newsletter, though we may cut back on what we include in the newsletter. So far, the newsletter seemed to be working, so I am a bit reluctant to switch to a web site. So much goes on behind the scenes that we work on, that to release stories one by one, and then send out a synopsis with headlines seems a bit too disjointed for our tastes. Also irking me to no end are the "button" advertisements on website!!!

Do you click on banners?

Do you click on menu items that I link to from somewhere else, because I personally read the menu items and found them to be interesting, and wanted to share?

That is the difference between traditional media and the pipeline. We want our partners to receive attention and interest in their products and services. We hope the small business owners in our neighborhood would thrive even more, if people knew that by supporting them they are contributing to a diverse and eclectic community.

There will be no buttons and banners. Not yet. Or, more aptly, there will be advertisers, but it won't look like buttons and banners and the differentiation between the two will be clearly noted, to appease the Gods of Journalistic Integrity.

Buttons and Banners- Boo! And while we're on this note, please don't get me started on the word "blast. Marking corporate types would call the newsletter we send out an email "blast," but we prefer it to just be proof that we were having a blast when we were developing the issue.

speaking of which, WICKER PARK FARMERS MARKET begins today, on park grounds, from 8AM to 2PM.

Pop-Up Deer on Vacant Land, Coming (and Leaving) Next Week

Urban Dwellers

The Week of June 6-11 2011

at 1827 Milwaukee Ave

Johalla Projects is proud to announce Urban Dwellers by Andrea Jablonski, in collaboration with Vicki Fuller of VLF Development. Urban Dwellers, large, silver-glittered deer installations, have been placed in an empty lot off of a highly visible and congested street. These structures are meant to serve as a reminder of nature and what may have existed previously, before urban development. Ms. Fuller approached Johalla Projects for this partnership with the goal of enriching the vacant lots near her business, which focuses on urban planning and development. Urban Dwellers debuts the week of June 6, 2011. Johalla Projects is excited to continue collaborating with Ms. Fuller. Please, keep your eyes open for future projects.
